Former LA Southwest Guard to be Inducted into the CCCMBCA Hall of Fame
Millage lead Los Angeles Southwest to the 2001 California Community Colleges Athletic Association’s state championship
Curtis Millage, who lead Los Angeles Southwest to the 2001 California Community Colleges Athletic Association’s state championship and then went on to Arizona State, has been selected for enshrinement by the CCCMBCA Board of Directors.
A graduate of Manual Arts, Millage was a scoring 6-foot-2 southpaw. He led the Cougars to a 30-9 record his sophomore season, highlighted by Los Angeles Southwest’s victory over San Jose City in the state finals at the University of Pacific. Los Angeles Southwest was seeded #3 in the south for the post-season.
He averaged 23 points, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game, earning him the Southern California’s player of the year. He finished the season as the state’s leader in scoring and steals. During Los Angeles Southwest’s run to the state title, Millage averaged 18.3 points and shot 53 percent in the three-game playoffs. As a freshman, he averaged 19.8 points, 4.3 steals and shot 51 percent from the field. In one game, she scored 41 points.
His on-floor success continued at Arizona State.
His freshman season, Millage was one of three Sun Devils to start all 29 games, leading the team in minutes per game at 30.1. He averaged 13.9 points in Pac-10 and in his final 25 games, he averaged 14.3 points, including a season-high 27. He finished the season averaging 15.2 points in road games in his first year of Division I play and posted double digits in nine of the 11 contests.
His sophomore season produced similar results. He finished his two-year career eighth in points (853), tied for seventh in scoring average (14.7), 10th in field goals (301) and seventh in free throw percentage (.732) among two-year players for the Sun Devils. He averaged 17.4 points per game in Pac-10 play in 2002-03, tied for fifth in the loop, and his 15.9 points per game overall was 10th best in the conference. Finished his career with 13 20-point games and made 49-of-56 (.875) free throws in the final 10 games and averaged 19.9 points in that span.
He earned honorable mention All-Pac-10.
Tony Jimenez of JUCO Report said, Millage “goes from baseline to baseline as fast as anyone and has a great ability to get to the rim. Has excellent quickness, acceleration and hops and ranked as a top five California junior college recruit.”
After finishing his college basketball career at Arizona State, Millage turned pro. He played professionally overseas for more than 19 clubs in various countries throughout a 15-year international career before making the transition into coaching in 2017. Millage announced his retirement from basketball in 2017. On July 8, 2019, Millage was hired as head coach for Shadow Mountain High School, following the departure of former NBA player Mike Bibby. Today, he serves as the head coach at Scottsdale Community College.
Millage, welcome to the CCCMBCA Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held at the Champions Banquet on Wednesday, March 12, at Doubletree Pomona, beginning at 5 pm. Tickets are $50.
